"There’s a very special bond between a mother and her first born, and her youngest. Her son, and her daughter. I consider myself the luckiest with Jerome and Hazel. My first born, and my son, Jerome. We didn’t have to try very hard for him, where we had to try hard was from about two years old on. The two’s came along, and they were easy to write off as terrible two’s. But three and four came around, and it wasn’t anything he’d grown out of. Despite the long nights he kept me up, and all of the extra cleaning up he left me to do, I thought his mischievous ways were cute. How was I supposed to stay mad at that face? His father, on the other hand, didn’t leave much room for leverage. He was harder on him, even at a young age, always pushing him to do things he didn’t want to do, putting him in the time outs I couldn’t bare, being more of the voice of reason rather than the enabler, which I’ll take the blame for. Four years later, and then came Hazel. An actual angel, never gave us any problems. But Jerome began acting out even more. I’ll never forget the Saturday morning that I was rushing to get Hazel ready for the days event, and from her window you could see straight out to the garage. I thought I was going crazy, seeing my five year old son standing up there veering toward the edge! But the voice of Mrs. DiVenere screaming for him to come down proved my sanity. It was a good twenty minutes of half of the neighborhood begging for him to come down, but as soon as his father pulled up in the driveway, there was a “ready, set, go” and off he went. How that child only broke his arm is beyond me. Daniel called it an attention thing, but I felt like it was more than that. He was always trying to prove he was invincible in one way or another, and that was the first of many incidents we’d go through with him between then and eighteen, when he told us he didn’t need us anymore. Still, I couldn’t manage to be mad at him. Upset, worried? Sure, but never angry. He moved out that night, at that point we had no idea where he’d made the money to rent out an apartment in the city. Well, I didn’t anyway. Daniel claims he knew this was going on. But he needed us around nineteen, when we got the collect call from the Manhattan Detention Complex. And while he may have needed us then, his father had just about had it, and there was nothing within my power I could do for him." Maria West, mother

COURT REPORT (TESTIMONY): "I supplied.. a few commodities for which my peers were willing to pay lots and lots of cold, hard cash. .. Then I recruited several of my friends from my Catholic school to form a syndicate dedicated to servicing these young, upwardly mobile consumers....."
(All of this happened right under the hosts of the local and federal law enforcement. Then, one of my henchmen decided to scare the living shit out of two kids who owed us some money - not some, a whole fucking lot - to the point where he committed suicide. A year later and that blame was put on me. I stood trial the youngest person in the United States history ever to be indicted under the Kingpin Statute. In the end, over a dozen defendants who where part of my case were sentenced hard time. Two people were still fugitives. Many of my former runners cooperated and testified against me. I did not testify against anyone, and made no plea bargains. It was set to be a twenty-year sentence, but good behavior and the opening of the case again got me out of that hell hole in two years, six months, four days)
