The New Layla Sinclair
By Sam Kashner | Styled by Long Nguyen |
It’s hard not to have preconceptions about Layla Sinclair. We have all read the tabloids and all witnessed her downfall into drugs and sordid behaviour with boyfriend, the late Lukas Harvey. We’ve all heard the rumors of her being difficult on set, showing up impossibly late to events and her reputation causing underwhelming box office performances, but that wasn’t the girl I met when I showed up to the penthouse suite of the Waldorf Astoria.
I was actually met by a housewife that seemed to have stepped straight out of the 50’s. Apron and all. I almost couldn’t help but laugh, watching one of Hollywood’s bad girls look like she was going to Halloween dressed as Donna Reed. “Is it that time already?” She gasped as she greeted me, flour across her cheek and the smell of indulgent baking wafting through the suite. “I’m so sorry, I bake when I’m nervous.” She apologies and I already find myself confronted with a side of Layla Sinclair I had yet to see or even read about. Who knew she baked? Soon we're settled into the high backed armchairs in the lounge, an antique tea set between us with a platter of warm and surprisingly delicious cookies. I was almost expecting her to pull a Cher Horowitz and retrieve am uncut roll of burnt cookie dough from the oven.
There has been a long story to the short life of Layla Sinclair, daughter of international supermodel Bianca Hart and Oscar winning actor turned Oscar winning director, Ezra Sinclair. She's been at the centre of car crashes, statutory rape allegations, sex tapes, law suits, domestic abuse claims, drug charges, attempted suicides, overdoses, paternity disputes, and that was just the tip of the iceberg. Layla Sinclair managed to beat out even the Kardashian's as the #1 most googled celebrity. A claim that she's not exactly proud of, "Who would waste their time googling me?!".
The long legged actress, sips delicately at her black tea as she hesitates at the big question we all know was coming, Lukas Harvey. "A lot of people had a lot to say about Lukas and I. He had a less then stellar reputation and at first, he all but terrified me, but despite what everyone says i always saw a different side to him." She sips at tea between thoughts and takes her time, and I find it fascinating that a year on, this young ingénue still struggles with her loyalties towards the volatile and infamous artist. "I think everyone expected those kind of things from him, but seeing them come from me was always were the scandal lay" She muses finally. "It was never easy marching to the beat of his drum though. I lost a lot over those years - friends, family, jobs, credibility, sobriety, sanity..."
A silence falls and I know that's the end of that. The door closes on that part of her life and opens to another. And I ask the next question on everyone's lips, Jean Paul. "Jean Paul and I always agreed to never speak publicly about that." She answers mysteriously "But I will say that we were never intimate, I know what everyone has said, and the accusations are false. Jean Paul is a friend. He is a wise man, who helped me greatly move on after Lukas's death and helped me grow greatly as my own person." Lucky her cookies are delicious, because for the girl who was once at the centre at some of the biggest scandals in Hollywood, she has certainly learnt to be tight lipped.
Even when it comes form the talk of 2014 Oscar predictions, her current role as Harvey Weinstein's golden goose and the hype about her latest movie "Dusk til Dawn" about a two inter-racial lovers during WWI. "Harvey is a darling, I still remember him interrupting a lunch date at Les Deux to beg for a formal meeting with me. I thought he was a mad man, but I agreed and here I am." Does she take anything seriously? "Of course, I take all my roles seriously. I love being on set, being in costume and losing myself in a character. If I ever turn up on set and don't love what I'm doing or don't take it seriously, that will be the day I quit acting forever." Hopefully, for the sake of the rest of us that day doesn't come anytime soon.
