Mum and Dad always fought about the resort while James, Fern, Will, Beth and I tried to keep out of the way. Sometimes the tourists would leave our Mum flowers, thanking her until the bouquets inevitably died on the counter. They would have sailed away long before that, little shrinking white violets from the porch on the ocean. Dad gambled a lot, but was good at it, so until he lost it was never a problem.
