She will always be a bit of a child, wide-eyed and innocent and well intending. Her walk is light and not altogether straight, looking much as she did the first time she'd ever gotten drunk. Holden had been the first person to buy her alcohol when she was underage, often climbing in her bedroom window with pink grapefruit this or that she and Ezra would drink when they went to parties together. That was before any of them got their hand on drugs, before any of them smoked a lot of cigarettes. His touch on her shoulder is reassuring, protective, and Kacey lets herself remember what it was like to be who they were before things got complicated. Her light eyes roll as he banters back, the last sober section of her mind grateful for normal. "I bet you knew I put it on and followed me here."Holden is always there, and though she isn't quite drunk enough to wander into traffic, she allows him and the dog to shepherd her foreward. The LA beach is crowded, but no so that they wouldn't be left alone. The sun gleams in her eyes as he points across, and the brunette has to shield her face to see where he's talking about. "I'm fine, Dad." She nudges his shoulder with hers and she bounds ahead of him a few steps to meet the sand. It sinks with her weight, the mass of it white and slippery. She slips off her flip flops and goes barefoot, tipping her face to the sun. Peeking open one eye as he reaches her, she laughs. "Dad, I think you forgot the towels." ......................... notes: look at the babies.

Holden rolls his eyes at the petite brunette and smiles a bit sheepishly. He makes a sharp turn into some long grass, the stems of dry foliage scratches his bare calves and he moves quicker. His hand lets go of the dog's leash and Sophia bounds through the grass ahead of of him. When she reaches the sand he softly whistles, which makes the dog halt and look back at him. This section of the beach is rockier, large boulders fill the water and thick pebbles line the shoreline. Half the beach is sand, though crustier and not as soft as it would be up ahead. He can't see anyone else for a quarter of a mile, which is where the stones must turn into more of a sandy consistency. This isn't a beach for surfing but certainly a beach for a sleep.
In the background there's a splash and he looks up to see the giant dog launching herself into the water, her mouth open as she buckets salty water into her mouth. He laughs and pulls his shirt over his head, accidentally along with his hat as well as glasses. As he forks a hand through his hair and places his glasses back on, he works on pulling his shoes and socks off. Holden plops his ass down on the sand, digging a hole with his heels and getting comfortable. As he's making a pathetic looking pillow out of sand and his shirt, a rock drops at his side. The dog's only flaw is a massive one – a never ending game of fetch. Holden frowns, shaking his head and picking up the rock, “seriously?” Sophia's moon eyes stare up at the rock thirstily, bolting after it as it's chucked into the water and submerging her head into the waves to fetch it.

Kate watches the pair of them, boy and dog, as they play. She can't recall a time where Holden looked happier, but the smile on his face brings a wave of nostalgia through her. Her fingers and toes are numb from beer, and she tries to avoid the rocks as she steps through the sand. She is silent as she walks to his side, her gaze taking in the ink on his ribs as he undresses. As Holden makes a place for himself in the ground, the wind touching his dark hair, Kacey peels back the shirt she's wearing and slides the jean cut offs down her legs. She stands to his left, bikini clad, looking after Sophie. "You know, the dog kind of has the right idea." As she says it, she's taking off after the canine, hair whipping around behind her and halting directly before the shore line. The water is cold as she dips in her toes, looking back over her shoulder at Holden as the dog brings him her catch. She hears him talking to her, and it makes Kacey grin, warming her to see the affection in his eyes. Animals always knew who the good ones were. Sophie and Holden were no different. The rock lands somewhere to her right, and the dog takes off after it, jumping into the surf without abandon. "Sophie! C'mere pretty girl!" The dog holds the rock tenderly in her jowls, places it at Kate's feet. As Kate bends to pick it up, the dog's snout finds it's way in her hair, lapping at her exposed ears, snorting happily at the prospect of getting the rock thrown for her again. Kate laughs, a tinker, and throws the rock up the beach towards where Holden sits. As Sophie departs after it, the brunette stands with a hand on her hip, calling up to the pair of them. "Let's go Dad, I wanna go for a swim. I'm not going in without you." ......................... notes: so much dog.

Though it might have seemed easy for him, Holden wasn't very good at leaving things behind. The list of people he had seemingly forgotten about was a long one: Ezra, his mother, his father, Harper, Katie and most childhood friends. Good people that he had cut from his life, who he'd shut out and deleted. Seemingly. In the background they weren't forgotten, he was a bad friend and a bad brother, but he did make sure to keep tabs. Like asking how Ezra was or doing a quick social media check on him. Kate was no different. Although he said he wanted no part of her, there was no way he could fully dispose of her without feeling complete heartache.
When she runs toward the beach he finds himself catching his lip and feeling guilty for letting his eyes drift admiringly over the curves of her frame. When Sophia rushes back to him and sets the rock between his feet, he takes her head within his hands and massages her ears. He gives her a loving peck on the head before whipping the rock just shy of Kate. “Alright, alright,” he agrees a bit reluctantly. Gathering his accessories into a pile by his shoes, he pushes himself back to his feet. He's nimble as he walks into the water, side-stepping larger sharp rocks and then gracelessly treading through knee deep water. “Come on, Soph,” she perks her ears, reluctantly watching him for a few seconds before excitingly splashing into deeper water.
When it's deep enough the black haired boy takes a dive underwater, arms stretching through the depth and pulling him a dozen feet forward. The water reaches just below his tanned shoulders, long stands of hair fall in his eyes forcing him to dramatically sift his hand over his head. “Are you coming?”
