A LETTER FROM MY OLDEST SISTER - 06/03/23
When my mother died while giving birth to me, my oldest sister was 17. Bea was 16, Nora was 14, Cecilia was 12 and Alma was 9. My mother was Irish born and raised, she came to California when she was just 17 and fell in love with my Filipino father. She was fair skinned, with the milky-way dusted on her face. My father's naturally dark skin, turned to cinnamon while he worked his landscape business.
My mother held the household, that's what my sisters tell me. she was only twenty-two when she became pregnant with Diana and the other four arrived shortly after. She was a full-time mother and wife. She took care of each of my sister tenderly and fairly, and when my father came home there would be dinner waiting for him.
When I was little I loved hearing stories about my mother. I loved when my Aunties would tell me how much I looked like her, I loved when I would do something and they would say, "that's so Pauline." I didn't notice the pain in my father's eyes when he'd look at me, or that he'd find an excuse to work or go to the bar on my birthday. These weren't things that I noticed until I was older and more sensitive.
I never asked my father's permission, or checked in with him when I went to a friend's after school. Diana was the one who signed my field trip slips and packed my lunches. My big sister read me stories and kissed me goodnight. She gave up college to teach me how to talk and walk. My father turned to drinking, while my sister became my mother.
JASON DEITHER 1986 - 2020
In August 2020, American Jason Deither died attempting an unnamed 6,800m peak in the Karakoram. He was climbing alpine style with Roy Levi in Pakistan’s Kande Valley. On Aug. 11, the climbers suffered an accident. Tamura died and Levi was injured. The search team could not find his body.
Deither was an experienced climber, with expeditions on Everest, Manaslu, and Cho Oyu. He piled up expeditions elsewhere in the Himalaya and Karakoram too, as well as on Aconcagua, Denali, Mount Logan, and Vinson in Antarctica.
