plot
Daniel Gianni Romano (born 9 May 1989) is an American actor. Despite never having acted before, he landed the leading role of vampire Tate Carter in the film adaptions of the Nightfall novels by Sally Morwood and came to worldwide fame, thus establishing himself among the highest paid and most bankable actors in Hollywood. In 2012, Romano was named one of TIME magazine's 100 Most Influential People in the World, and also in the same year Forbes ranked him as one of the most powerful celebrities in the world in the Forbes Celebrity 100.
Early Life
Daniel Gianni Romano was born on May 9, 1989, in New York City, and grew up in Staten Island, New York. He is the eldest child of Rosa Romano (born Rosa Sullivan) and Richard Romano. Romano has one younger sister, the singer-songwriter Scarlett Romano. Both of Romano's parents are of Italian descent; he was raised as a Catholic. Romano attended Curtis High School, where he did well in history and science. In 2007 Romano turned down an invitation to attend New York University, choosing instead to pursue an apprenticeship in the field of mechanics.
Romano's parents divorced when he was ten, and Romano claims that was the last time he saw his father until he became famous and Richard sought to reunite with him. Romano claims his father's motivations were rooted in accessing his son's wealth, and that the two have not spoken since. With their father absent and Rosa working long shifts to fund the family, Romano acted as a guardian for his little sister. In a 2012 interview with Teen Vogue, Romano called Scarlett his "best friend, and the only person who really cares about me." Scarlett Romano often speaks about her relationship with her brother, thanking him in the acknowledgements on her 2013 album 'Lucky Shiner'.
Nightfall Saga
In 2010, Romano landed the coveted role of Tate Carter in the film Nightfall, based on Sally Morwood's best-selling novel of the same name. Morwood insisted that the role of Tate would have to be played by someone who had not acted previously, or whose acting experience was at the least very limited, so as to maintain the stilted vulnerability of the character. Director Heather Irons took her car for repairs at the Wilson & Sons Garage in New York, where Romano was working, and insisted that he come in for casting. As soon as Morwood heard him speak, she said "it was like he had walked right out of my head and into the room. That was it, we had found our Tate Carter."
The film was released on 03 September 2010 and turned Romano into a moviestar overnight. Though the film received mixed reviews, critics praised his and co-star Gia Henderson's chemistry in the film. The New York Times called Romano a "capable and exotically beautiful" actor and Roger Ebert said he was "well-chosen" for the role.
He reprised his role as Tate Carter in the Nightfall sequel The Nightfall Saga: Lunar Eclipse, which was released on 20 November 2012. The film earned a record-breaking $142,839,137 opening weekend and an overall run of $709,827,462 worldwide. Though the film received negative reviews, film critic Michael Phillips from the Chicago Tribune said that Romano was still "interesting to watch" despite the bad makeup. Bill GoodyKoontz from the Arizona Republic said that "Romano's actually not in the film that much, but he does his best when he's around" and Michael O'Sullivan of the Washington Post noted that his acting was "uniformly strong".
In early 2014 Romano announced that he was taking a hiatus from acting.
Personal Life
In early 2011, after much public speculation, Romano confirmed in an interview with GQ that he was seeing the singer Valentina Diaz of the group VKA. He said of the union:
I actually knew Valentina back in New York. I fixed up her car back when I was just fucking about with motors for a living. I'm not joking! The next time I saw her was at the People's Sexiest Man 2010 after party, and we joked about it. She's a completely different person when it's just the two of us. We're happy enough. The high profiles of both Romano and Diaz drove intense media attention and speculation at the time, which Romano claims put an "immense strain" on the relationship. In January 2013 photographs emerged of Diaz appearing affectionate with rapper Kanye West, which Us Weekly asserted were evidence of an affair. However, the day the photographs emerged Romano claimed that he and Diaz had in actuality split up some time before, and said that he wished the couple well.
As of June 2014, Romano has been linked with model Calgarie Matthews.

"The hardest thing about being famous is that people are always nice to you. You're in a conversation and everybody's agreeing with what you're saying - even if you say something totally crazy. You need people who can tell you what you don't want to hear." - Al Pacino
"Don't go around saying the world owes you a living. The world owes you nothing. It was here first." - Mark Twain
"No place epitomizes the American experience and the American spirit more than New York City." - Michael Bloomberg
"I think if you follow anyone home, whether they live in Houston or London, and you sit at their dinner table and talk to them about their mother who has cancer or their child who is struggling in school, and their fears about watching their lives go by, I think we're all the same." - Brene Brown
"One of the cruelest things you can do to another person is pretend you care about them more than you really do." - Douglas Coupland
"Vertigo is the conflict between the fear of falling and the desire to fall." - Salman Rushdie
trivia
- Scarlett Romano once played a gig on her brother's birthday, and sang a cover of Fiona Apple's 'Daredevil' in his honor.
- A tarot card reader once told him he would have a "fruitless career", and to "fear death by water". He said of the advice: "I guess since I've had a pretty fruitful career already, I should probably avoid death by land. I'm gonna buy a houseboat and only venture away from the sea when I've really gotta."
- Romano is a lifelong supporter of the Mets.
- When attending the People's Sexiest Man party, Romano jokingly wore a worn out sweatshirt and sweatpants. Two months later this incident would be cited in GQ, as supporting evidence for his top placement on the best dressed men of 2010 list. The magazine called it "effortless sartorial rebelliousness."
- In answer to endless speculation about his relationship with his Nightfall co-star Gia Henderson, Romano said: "People always wanna know this. Am I fucking her, or is she more like a second sister to me? When did we get this way? Are those the only two relationships a guy can have with a girl - fuck buddy or sister? Gia's not my sister or my girlfriend, she's my colleague. She's also great at what she does, so maybe you could focus on that instead of always asking this same boring question."
- Out of principle, Romano has never eaten a pizza that was not made in New York.
- Though academically competent, he very nearly didn't graduate after starting a fight with a fellow student just two days before the ceremony.
- Romano cites Chris Pratt as his favorite actor.
- Romano adopted a chocolate labrador in mid 2013. Despite it being a bitch, he called it Kanye.
- He has two labradors: Kanye and Jay.
- Despite having a steady girlfriend from the age of fifteen to nineteen, Romano claims they didn't have sex until he was eighteen as he was scared of God. "There I was, in bed with this beautiful girl, this girl I was so totally in love with. And she's wanting to, and I'm saying no, 'cause I'm scared God'll be pissed, so I say we should wait 'til we're eighteen. As if God's gonna be less pissed a couple years down the line! I gotta say, when we did do it I'm pretty sure the Big Man was fist bumping from up there. I was pissed that I'd spent so long not doing it."
- Though he plays him, Romano doesn't like Tate Carter. When asked what his character would do if he was cheated on, Romano replied: "Probably kidnap her and make her watch him physically torturing himself - real barbed wire around his genitals stuff. I don't know. I think if Tate were real, I think if he were real he'd be institutionalized in the name of public safety. I'd hope so."
