how long have you been doing interior design & what got you interested in it?
My mother, the late Sophia McKinney, was an extraordinary interior designer for the Vancouver area. She thrived herself on being the best designer she could be, and more importantly, the best mother she could be. She put herself into her work every single day, and fulfilled all of her client's wishes to the best of her ability. I've always had an eye for detail, and always loved the decorating of rooms, and the design of rooms. When it came time to pick my major, and my school, I knew what I wanted to do. I've been in the interior design business for a few years now, and I myself have been thriving as my mother did. have you always lived in new york city? have you ever seen yourself living elsewhere?
Actually, no. I'm from Vancouver, Canada. I lived there my entire life, until I got accepted to the New York School of Interior Design. I spent four years in the big city, met my fiancee, and decided to settle down here. I love Vancouver, and I LOVE the states. And I adore New York City. I'd love to settle down when the baby comes, but I'll have to see what Noah wants. It all comes down to what's best for the family.
what inspires your everyday life?
Nix. My mother. This little bundle of joy I'm carrying inside me. Um. Everything, really. I wouldn't be here without my Mom, and I wouldn't have met Noah without her pushing me to pursue Interior Design. So. Yeah, my family.
if you had to eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
My pregnancy cravings are getting worse...and right now, I'm on a pick for bread and butter pickles. I ate a whole jar in one sitting...sooooo...pickles!!
where do you see yourself in ten years? professionally and personally?
Probably in a quiet city, with Nix, my daughter. Maybe a son. A few dogs. My booming business. Happy. For once, I want to be happy. Fully 100% happy.
what do you love most about Noah?
I met Nix back in 2004 when he was a student at Columbia University, and I was attending the New York School of Interior Design. I was at one of his frat parties, and we made eye contact..and just connected. We became friends, and didn't start dating heavily until 2006, and became serious in 2007. We've been on and off throughout the years, but buckled down and got serious in 2012. He proposed on Christmas Eve, and I announced my pregnancy in January. And we're starting our family. And everything is happening the way it should be.
But to actually answer your question...I love everything. I love the way he sings super loudly in the car..and I love the faces he makes when he eats something he doesn't like. I love how protective he is over myself and our unborn baby girl. I love how he loves me. I love his hugs. I love his kisses. I love his cuddles. I don't know...I just love him so deeply at this point, and I can't pinpoint one thing that I love more than the other.
describe yourself in 5 words
I hate describing myself, honestly! But, if I have to...determined, maternal, detail oriented, hard-working, loving...probably. You'd have to ask Nix!
what are three things you couldn't live without
Nix, my little girl, my sketchbook and pencils, and my iPhone. Sorrrrrry it's more than 3!
where would we find you on the weekend, or on your day off?
Central park, around the city, on dates with Noah, pedicure and manicure with my girls, out to lunch, grocery shopping...sleeping. I work five days a week, and get the weekends off, as does Nix. It's great that our schedules mesh up, seriously. Most mornings we'd be in bed until eleven, and usually have breakfast in bed..but either way...I'm either with Nix, at Doctors appointments or with my girls.
what have you been listening to recently?
Ingrid Michaelson, Ed Sheeran, 1975...an eclectic mix, really. All of the summer jams. You know, the usual!
who is your #1 role model, dead or alive?
My mother. I could go on and on about her, but I think it's obvious.
