ten facts about my mother
o1. a naturally optimistic woman. she never had anything bad to say about anything. if she did, she'd say something like, "forgive me, but that woman."
o2. when spring broke, and the lilacs came into bloom, she used to pick their branches. she'd decorate our house in purple. and even when they were long gone, the house would reak of lilac perfume.
o3. on the subject of perfume, she always wore dior. dior and ponds cream. she swore the moisturiser helped the perfume stick.
o4. she loved to garden.. our little yellow house was surrounded by bushels of wild flowers. healthy, bright, well maintained flowers, not a weed in sight. she'd come into the house with mud caked on her knees.
o5. allergic to cats, but loved them to bits. our cat sammy used to love sleeping on her lap and no matter how uncomfortable she became she couldn't bear to kick him off.
o6. peppermint tea was a habit i picked up from her. she drank it before she went to bed. when i was really little she'd come into my bedroom to lay a peppermint kiss on my forehead.
o7. she had a terrible cheesy sense of humour. the screech of rubber made her laugh, she couldn't resist a good fart joke.
o8. at the same time she was an incredibly empathetic woman. i used to catch her tearing up during commercials. after she read marley and me, she was inconsolable.
o9. my mother died when i was eighteen. terminal cancer. by the time she passed away there wasn't an area of her body it hadn't wrecked. i was driving home from school when she passed, it is one of my biggest regrets.
10. i like to go home in the spring. my dad lives alone, i think he's lonely. so when the lilacs bloom, i'll sneak away from my life for a week or two and play decorator.
