I LIKE PERSONS BETTER THAN PRINCIPLES, AND I LIKE PERSONS WITH NO PRINCIPLES BETTER THAN ANYTHING ELSE IN THE WORLD.
Hi Reddit, Isaac McAvoy from Cat's Cradle here. I'm contractually obliged to mention that our new album, Go At It, is out on November 5th. That said, AMA.
TOP 200 ANSWERS
Isaac, I went to your show in Phoenix about two years ago, I think it was one of your first. It was before the EP was even out, anyway, and I loved every minute. So weird to see you doing the VS show. Not to be a dick, but do you ever feel like you've sold out? After all, those shows aren't about the music in the way that that basement in AZ was. Howdy. Thanks for this, I do remember that show and I get where you're coming from. Sometimes I look back on those days and ache for it... but then I remember having to miss my wife's birthday, and not even being able to afford to buy her some flowers, and it's a trade off I'm happier to make. You're right that VS isn't about music, though. But Taylor, our bassist, had just been through a bad break up, and I thought surrounding him with supermodels in lingerie would be a nice gesture. I took one for the team.
I read somewhere that you studied medicine. What made you quit and turn to music? Same things that make everyone turn to music: sex, drugs and hating exams. Though I missed out on the sex, I was already married by the time I dropped out.
Was your wife jealous when you did VS? Is it tough maintaining a commitment when you're always on tour, especially when you married so young? My wife's a saint, and hotter than most supermodels. I'm biased but I've had this verified. If anything I'm the jealous one, I make her Facetime me all the time when I'm on the road to check that she's on her own. It's not as bad as it sounds! Chloe is extremely motivated, she's too busy with her own shit to worry about teenagers asking me to sign their boobs.
I just wanted to say thank you for every time you've spoken out about your anxiety disorder. I suffer from it too, and the more we talk about it the more we stand a chance of tackling it. Agreed man, and I'm sorry you're in the same boat. I hope this comes across as liberatingly existentialist rather than hopelessly fatalistic, but something that helped me a lot was accepting that it doesn't get better. The anxiety, it's always gonna be there, it's always gonna be horrific. When I stopped putting pressure on myself to somehow shake it off, or giving myself a hard time after the fact, it was the biggest weight off my shoulders. Nowadays I accept it as something that occasionally happens to me, like a migraine or a bad trip. It's not the end of the world.
As much as I'm excited for Go At It, I just wanted to be sure you'll still be playing a good amount of your older material at live sets? Always. We try to have enough of the new stuff that the set feels fresh, but it always pissed me off as a kid when you'd go to a gig and they'd only play their new stuff and maybe a couple big hits. We don't want to force the new album on you.
Maybe like two years ago, you told Pitchfork you hated celebrity culture. Now you're doing VS and you and your wife did a Kooples campaign. What changed? You're being kind, I'm pretty sure what I said was "fuck off, I hate that shit", and that was in response to someone comparing me to Adam Levine. No offense to Adam Levine & co, but I'd hope that the best ever Maroon 5 song would still be shittier than our shittest one. That's not even a compliment to us, that's just a comment on how shit Maroon 5 are. I'm kidding, you do have a point (and so do I about Maroon 5). I stand by what I said, I never want to be someone with a Wikipedia page that describes me as actor, presenter, vocalist, model, coach, professional name dropper, model botherer, entrepreneur... you get the gist. I still hate the cult of celebrity, and nothing pisses me off more than people who are famous for being famous. I'm gonna sound like every MTV soundbite ever, but if I could make music (more specifically make money from making music) without fame, that would be a dream come true. I don't think I'm that much of a familiar face and I don't want to be.

ADVENTURE WITHOUT RISK IS DISNEYLAND.
"Panic attacks are nothing to feel embarrassed about, Isaac. In fact, one in ten people suffer from them at some point over a lifetime. One in a hundred regularly. Just breathe - it'll pass. Did you know that the word 'panic' comes from ancient Greece? It's said that when you crossed paths with the god Pan you would be frozen with fear, completely immobilized. Sound familiar? That's what I'm saying, Zac. Far from being abnormal, this is something people have been battling with since ancient times.
Stop looking at me like that, this is supposed to be making you feel better."
AND THERE NEVER WAS AN APPLE, IN ADAM'S OPINION, THAT WASN'T WORTH THE TROUBLE YOU GOT INTO FOR EATING IT.
