When Elaine and I got married in 1973, at only nineteen years of age, neither one of us knew we would go on to have twelve children. I am an only child, and she is also an only child; we didn't 'plan' to have a large family. We talked about having two, close enough in age to be playmates. Little did we know that there would be an additional ten.
Rob was our first, I was still in college when Elaine gave birth. Then came Greta, and Kevin, when Luke came into the picture it was decided by Elaine that she would dedicate herself full-time to her children. This was a difficult decision for her, as my career was progressing hers was coming to a halt. Alan and Martha were twins, as were Finlay and Tara. We were fortunate in the fact that all the babies were healthy, and there were no complications at birth.
Having a large family is not for every one, it has its advantages and disadvantages. While for the most part were were well-off with money - I was left with an inheritance that aided us - there were times in which we struggled. And while we've done our best to make sure of each child's needs, some times they do fall between the cracks. We have been blessed with intelligent children, all practical geniuses. Education was emphasised, they each had two hours of study time each night, with only an hour television or video games. All are leading exceptional careers. Rob is an anaesthesiologist, and also just welcomed his third child. Martha and Kevin have their own law firm, 'Livingston and Associates'. Greta is a successful neurologist, Luke sells medical supplies, Alan is a sports physician, Tara is in medical school, Winston is preparing to write the bar, and Jessa is pregnant with her second. Harrison is in Kenya as well as writing his thesis, and Finlay's an architect. Olive runs a brewery in NYC, but she tells me she's considering law school.

I have three great loves: folk music, the woods, and a good craft beer.
Folk music is something I inherited from my dad. I remember car rides, sitting shotty, and listening to Bob Dylan... I remember listening to Johnny Cash's 'Hurt', and having my dad yell at me when I mimed slitting my wrists. But truly, folk is something so deeply routed in me, and I can't shake it. My friends don't listen to folk, and if they knew I listened to Angus Stone as well as Marcus Mumford, they might disown me. Folk is like my period, I must hide it! I play guitar too, and sometimes, after a good day at work, I'll bring it out and start singing.. a good day at work entails copious amounts of beer, and an extra kick of confidence. I'm an absolutely horrible singer, but a not so bad guitar player. Silky vocals, and acoustics make me wet.
The woods.. god, I'm not a tree hugger, let's not get the wrong idea. I grew up in a very woodsy area, so I suppose it's kind of a comfort. When I was a kid I'd play in the trees with my siblings, and then when I was a teenager it became my solace. I smoked my first cigarette in the woods, fucked multiple boyfriends, listened to my folk music, and drank my craft bear. The woods; the bridge between innocence and rebellion.
Jackknife Brewery started early 2014. So literally four months ago, but it's been my baby since last summer. You could say it actually sprouted in the woods, it practically did.. but more like on the dock, at a cottage, under the moon, with my feet sketching circles in the lake, and my mouth rambling on about business that wasn't mine. And once the idea seemed to wedge itself in the columns of my mind, it just wouldn't leave. It wasn't easier either, like when Oscar and I drunkly spoke about it at the cottage last year, we cut it up to be so simple.. Even the next day when we revisited the idea, didn't seem so hard. It was only until we began to lay out plans, like copyrights, real estate, finances, even the general taste of our beer.. that's when it got difficult. Finances - that's where Oscar introduced me to his brother, Damian, who was a model and Tyra Bank's ex-best-friend.. anyway, Damian had buttloads of cash to spend, and offered.. or maybe we begged, he agreed to co-own our business. We found our building shortly there after. It's in Brooklyn, a medium sized facility; we went into renovation in September, and it's everything we imagined. When I say we, I definitely mean I, as Oscar was off taste-testing. He was the genius behind that, and I ran the operation. It's still very much like that, and yes, it is as fun as it sounds. I drink beer all day, make phone calls, interview people, hire people on. When my dad told me to do what I love, I don't think he meant run a brewery.
